Key insight: Surgical Periodontics carries the highest weightage (approximately 20%), making it one of the most important areas to master. This reflects the exam’s strong focus on clinical decision-making, flap design, regenerative procedures, and surgical outcomes.
Non-surgical therapy and
Implant-related topics (together ~30%) also form a significant portion of the
exam, highlighting the importance of foundational periodontal care as well as
implant maintenance and peri-implant disease management.
Overall, the exam emphasizes a
balanced approach—from basic disease understanding to advanced surgical and
implant-based treatment planning.
What is the core clinical area that must be mastered?
The exam assesses competence across four broad domains:
· Clinical expertise — periodontal diagnosis,
non-surgical therapy (scaling and root planing), surgical procedures (flap
surgery, regenerative and resective techniques), mucogingival surgery, and
implant-related procedures
·
Treatment planning and case management —
comprehensive periodontal evaluation, risk assessment, staging and grading of
disease, sequencing of care, and interdisciplinary coordination (endo, prostho,
ortho, oral surgery)
·
Management of complications and outcomes — periodontal
disease progression, treatment failures, surgical complications, peri-implant
diseases, and long-term maintenance protocols
·
Classic and current periodontics literature —
evidence-based practice, understanding of disease mechanisms, and awareness of
advances in regenerative therapy, biomaterials, and implant dentistry
